I started Local Color Flowers to combine my interests and skills into a business that promotes my values and passions.

My first experience working within local agriculture was a weekend job at a Maryland farm and at Baltimore farmers' markets several years ago. I soon became a Baltimore Master Gardener and moved from a farm stand to the plant clinic table at the markets. I loved teaching people about flowers and how to grow them in the city.

Spending time with market customers, I saw the great demand for fresh, local produce and the overwhelming support of local farmers. I recognized another opportunity to connect local farmers with customers by providing the additional value of floral design services. When I read Amy Stewart's book, Flower Confidential, I was inspired to combine everything I learned on the farm and at the markets with my entrepreneurial spirit and open Local Color Flowers.

Growing up admiring my mother’s and grandmothers’ flower gardens, then working in a green house for a Baltimore County farmer, and later preparing my own wedding flowers has all led me to becoming a professional floral designer.

I have now been working with flowers and designing arrangements and bouquets for seven years. Each year I learn something new: varieties I've never seen before, different techniques, or changing styles. I love working with flowers, especially the creativity involved to craft a beautiful floral product.

Seeing a bride’s face when I hand her a bouquet or the reaction when delivering arrangements for a special event is the blissful culmination of my work. Knowing the people who grew the flowers, thinking about their farms, and reflecting on my work to turn their stems into the final product is what makes those moments special for me too.
